Disordered Eating
Sometimes an elite athlete really struggles to eat all that their body needs and also get the key nutrients it needs for performance and injury prevention because they have fears such as: weight gain, eating “unhealthy” foods, eating foods they have heard athletes should not eat, and more. This can lead to results like weight loss, increased anxiety, fatigue, injury, muscle loss, decreased times, and overall drops in performance and well-being.
Consuming enough can be especially tough for athletes in more aesthetic sports or those sports where it seems “lighter” will equal better performance. As a result, these athletes can really struggle with underfueling (and likely low energy availability or RED-S). When you discover that these athletes need to increase and optimize their intake, they can really benefit from a team of professionals to help them through the uncertainty and discomfort of increasing their intake and coming out of their state of underfueling.
Disordered Eating really exists on a spectrum and sometimes it’s not until the athlete meets with a sports dietitian due to a recent injury or concerning event (passing out, dizziness, etc.) that the extent of the disordered eating can really be determined.
